Bio
Julia Qian is pursuing a dual degree in Architecture and Urban Planning at Columbia University. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Architecture from the University of Michigan, where a gap year of planning-related work inspired her interest in connecting design practice with urban policy and research. She has gained experience in architectural design, spatial analysis, and community-focused research through internships, teaching, and academic projects. Her work includes contributing to large-scale mixed-use development studies, examining affordable housing and zoning strategies, and exploring methods of spatial optimization. Julia also participated in the Neighborhood Rezoning Accounting Model project, gaining exposure to neighborhood-scale redevelopment and capital project management, which strengthened her understanding of how investment decisions and planning frameworks shape community outcomes. She has served as a teaching assistant and workshop lecturer, designing and leading tutorials on digital modeling and urban data methods. Her research focuses on using data-driven analysis and design to understand public space, inform inclusive decision-making, and support community engagement. Through the Community Planning Fellowship, Julia aims to connect academic research with practice, strengthen community relationships, and contribute to equitable, resilient, and well-designed urban spaces for all residents.
