Osvaldo Montas, Chair of the Science Department at Bronx Theatre High School, is a visionary educator whose leadership blends inquiry-based learning, equity, and creativity. With more than a decade of impact, he has cultivated a science program that engages both hearts and minds—empowering students to think critically, collaborate authentically, and see themselves as scientists.
As a certified Professional Learning Provider for the Next Generation Science Standards, Mr. Montas mentors STEM teachers across New York City in designing innovative, student-centered curricula that promote accessibility and inclusion. He leads professional learning in restorative practices, neurodiversity, and constructive conflict resolution—building communities of reflective, compassionate educators. As Faculty Advisor for the Gay-Straight Alliance, he fosters belonging and ensures that all students, especially LGBTQ+ youth, feel seen and supported.
Mr. Montas’s classroom is a dynamic fusion of science and art. His interdisciplinary courses in American Horror Film, Set Design, and Studio Art invite students to explore scientific principles through storytelling, aesthetics, and hands-on design. Beyond the classroom, he champions sustainability initiatives, local ecosystem fieldwork, and hydroponics projects that make science tangible and relevant.
An active scholar, Mr. Montas has contributed to research on urban science education, migration and food patterns, and parent engagement, while advancing process-based teaching through graduate work in school leadership. Through mentorship, scholarship, and creativity, Osvaldo Montas redefines what science education can be—rigorous, inclusive, and deeply connected to the human experience.
