Daniel Greene leads from the front lines of New York City’s public housing, not a central office. Inspired by his family’s dedication to service and early experiences engaging with the community, Mr. Greene joined the NYC Law Department in 2003. He spent over a decade protecting the city’s interests, securing a $100 million settlement with ExxonMobil, and leading Hurricane Sandy recovery efforts. This experience provided the tactical foundation for joining the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) in 2019. Recognizing a disconnect between administrative policy and residents’ daily realities, Mr. Greene eschewed the traditional central office in favor of working directly within housing complexes. Now the Executive Vice President for Property Management Operations, he has revolutionized the agency’s culture by earning the trust of frontline staff and launching the “TEMPO” lead abatement program, which uses a respectful, voluntary relocation model for families. He also introduced “Maintenance Cares,” a program that empowers staff to proactively report and address hazards before they escalate. These tactical shifts have resulted in the abatement of 15,000 apartments, putting the agency ahead of schedule to eradicate lead from its portfolio and ensuring a safer future for thousands of New York families. As a result of these programs, families have experienced fewer lead-related health risks and improved housing quality. By treating every maintenance request as an act of advocacy, Mr. Greene has transformed NYCHA’s operations into a system that values presence and transparency as much as technical results.
