Bio

For over twenty-seven years, Charon Sioson has inspired curiosity, creativity, and confidence in science classrooms across two continents. Born in Sorsogon City, Philippines, she discovered her love of science in fifth grade, encouraged by a teacher who nurtured her imagination and inquiry. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education with concentrations in Biology and Chemistry from St. Louise de Marillac College of Sorsogon and went on to teach advanced biology and chemistry in Philippine high schools for nearly a decade before being recruited to New York City in 2006.

In New York, Ms. Sioson became a founding science teacher at Gramercy Arts High School, where for twelve years she created vibrant, inquiry-based biology courses that emphasized relevance and rigor. Since 2020, she has brought that same passion to The High School of Fashion Industries, teaching biology, forensic science, and environmental science. Her students investigate air quality, environmental justice, and sustainability—producing public service announcements and organizing schoolwide science fairs, including an Air Quality Fair that engaged students, faculty, and visiting scientists in dialogue on environmental health.

A Math for America Master Teacher and founding member of the United Federation of Filipino American Educators, Ms. Sioson mentors colleagues, leads the rollout of New York State’s new biology curriculum, and coordinates HSFI’s Asian Culture Club. Through her teaching, mentorship, and global professional development work, Charon Sioson exemplifies the power of science education to connect communities, expand opportunity, and inspire lasting change.
