Bio
Polly Ruiying Xu is a Master of Fine Arts candidate in Transdisciplinary Design at Parsons School of Design. She holds a dual BA in Sociology from Columbia University and Sciences Po Paris, which informs her interdisciplinary approach to design and social research. Polly’s work focuses on advancing equitable wellbeing through participatory research and design, centering the lived experiences of underserved communities and amplifying their voices in decision-making processes. She has collaborated with nonprofits and international organizations, including UN Women, Plan International, and UNICEF China, supporting youth engagement, program strategy, and participatory design initiatives. Most recently, she co-convened a research project with middle school students in southwest China, exploring how storytelling and participatory practices can support adolescent wellbeing in under-resourced schools. This experience strengthened her interest in narrative-based, community-centered approaches that foster resilience, social connection, and individual agency. Through the NYC Community Planning Fellowship, Polly looks forward to applying her skills in social research, participatory design, and equity-focused practice to neighborhood-level initiatives across New York City. Outside of her academic work, she enjoys meditation and traveling, sometimes combining the two through retreats that allow her to explore new experiences and personal growth.
